Shadow Work Wounds Exploration

Betrayal / Mistrust Wound

Core Beliefs: "People cannot be trusted," "I am only safe when I am in total control," "If I drop my guard, I will be taken advantage of," and "Promises are always broken eventually."

Common Behaviors: Constant hypervigilance, difficulty delegating tasks, keeping people at emotional arms-length, testing other people's loyalty, controlling surroundings, and assuming hidden ulterior motives behind kind gestures.

  • In Relationships: Creating tests for partners or friends to fail, keeping secrets or withholding vulnerability to retain leverage, accusing partners of micro-disloyalties, and struggling with intimacy due to fear of being blindsided.
  • In the Body: Chronic muscle tension (especially in the jaw, shoulders, and neck), heightened startle reflex, shallow breathing, high baseline nervous system arousal, and gastrointestinal distress related to chronic stress.
  • In Thoughts: Constant risk assessment ("What are they really after?"), catastrophic forecasting about betrayal, obsessive checking or monitoring behaviors, and running mental scripts on how to protect oneself if someone turns on them.

Stultification Wound

Core Beliefs: "I am incompetent," "My authentic self and vitality are dangerous," "If I express my true ideas, I will be mocked or punished," and "I don't know enough to make my own decisions."

Common Behaviors: Decision paralysis, learned helplessness, withholding creative or intellectual ideas, deferring to authority figures even when they are wrong, second-guessing obvious facts, and abandoning projects right before completion.

  • In Relationships: Over-relying on a partner to make daily decisions (where to eat, what to buy, how to spend time), suppressing opinions to avoid conflict or judgment, and playing small or acting unknowledgeable to keep others comfortable.
  • In the Body: Brain fog, feeling "heavy" or lethargic, habitual slouching or posture that minimizes physical presence, throat tension, and feeling physically drained when asked to make choices or speak up.
  • In Thoughts: Persistent inner critic echoing "Who do you think you are?", pervasive imposter syndrome, loops of "I don't know what to do," and immediate self-invalidation right after having an original idea.

Rejection / Shame Wound

Core Beliefs: "I am inherently flawed and unlovable as I am," "There is something wrong with me at my core," "If people see the real me, they will be disgusted," and "I must be perfect to be acceptable."

Common Behaviors: Extreme perfectionism, hiding personal opinions or past experiences, severe self-criticism, avoiding social situations where judgment is possible, over-apologizing, and harsh self-punishment following minor mistakes.

  • In Relationships: Wearing a polished mask or persona, withdrawing completely at the first sign of disapproval, fear of physical or emotional vulnerability, and assuming that a partner's quietness or bad mood is caused by one's own shortcomings.
  • In the Body: Waves of sudden body heat or blushing during social interactions, feeling a dropping or sickening sensation in the stomach, aversion to eye contact, and pulling the chest inward to shield oneself.
  • In Thoughts: Rumination loops rehashing past conversations ("Why did I say that?"), negative self-labeling ("I'm an idiot," "I'm embarrassing"), and predicting that others are silently judging or disliking them.

Invisibility / Neglect Wound

Core Beliefs: "My needs do not matter," "I am a burden to others," "I have to take care of myself because no one else will notice," and "Expressing pain makes me needy."

Common Behaviors: Extreme hyper-independence, refusing to ask for help even in emergencies, minimizing personal suffering, deflecting attention back onto others, and hiding personal achievements or struggles.

  • In Relationships: Feeling resentful because needs go unmet without realizing those needs were never voiced, selecting partners who are emotionally unavailable or self-absorbed, and taking up as little physical and emotional space as possible.
  • In the Body: Feeling disconnected or numb from physical sensations, holding breath quietly, cold extremities, low energy, and ignoring physical hunger, fatigue, or illness until it becomes severe.
  • In Thoughts: "It's not a big deal," "Other people have it much worse," "I shouldn't bother anyone with this," and a recurring narrative of being completely on one's own in the world.

Abandonment Wound

Core Beliefs: "People always leave me," "I am not worth staying for," "Solitude is dangerous," and "I cannot survive on my own."

Common Behaviors: Clinging or anxious attachment patterns, staying in harmful or unfulfilling relationships out of fear of being alone, testing partners to see if they will stay, or ending relationships preemptively to avoid being left first.

  • In Relationships: Requiring constant reassurance, feeling intense panic over delayed text responses, difficulty giving partners space, and tolerating severe boundary violations just to keep the connection intact.
  • In the Body: Hollow, aching sensation in the chest or solar plexus, intense physical agitation during separation, rapid heartbeat, and feeling physically weak or faint when experiencing perceived rejection.
  • In Thoughts: "They are going to break up with me," "What did I do wrong?", constant monitoring of a partner's tone or facial expressions for signs of detachment, and catastrophic fear of the future.

Parentification Wound

Core Beliefs: "I am only valuable when I am serving, fixing, or performing," "I am responsible for everyone else's emotional well-being," "Resting is selfish," and "My value comes from my utility."

Common Behaviors: Chronic people-pleasing, inability to relax without feeling guilty, automatically stepping into the "caretaker" or "fixer" role in any group, difficulty setting boundaries, and burn-out cycles.

  • In Relationships: Attracting partners who need "rescuing" or fixing, managing a partner's schedule or emotional health at the expense of one's own, feeling guilty when demanding equal effort, and difficulty receiving care or gifts.
  • In the Body: Chronic adrenal fatigue, high blood pressure, tight chest, insomnia, difficulty relaxing physical muscles even when lying down, and tension headaches.
  • In Thoughts: "I need to fix this right now," "If I don't do it, everything will fall apart," "They need me," and feeling an urge to apologize whenever resting.

Over-Enabling Wound

Core Beliefs: "I am too fragile to handle life's hardships on my own," "Conflict will destroy me," "I need a stronger figure to handle difficult things," and "I shouldn't have to experience discomfort."

Common Behaviors: Low distress tolerance, shutting down or freezing during conflict, seeking step-by-step guidance for basic adult tasks, looking for savior figures, and avoiding accountability by playing helpless.

  • In Relationships: Relying heavily on partners to handle finances, bureaucracy, or hard conversations; becoming overly dependent; feeling overwhelmed when a partner sets firm boundaries; and blaming others for personal life outcomes.
  • In the Body: Sudden feeling of floppy weakness or loss of tone in muscles during confrontation, sudden exhaustion, stomach upsets during minor stress, and shallow chest breathing.
  • In Thoughts: "I can't handle this," "It's too hard," "Someone needs to do this for me," and viewing ordinary life challenges as unbearable crises.
